The recent UK-EU “reset” agreement! What doesn’t mean for imported beef.

The UK announced on Monday the 19th of Mat a new reset agreement which primarily focuses on easing trade barriers between the UK and the EU, particularly concerning agricultural and food products. This includes a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement aimed at reducing border checks and paperwork for plant and animal products, thereby facilitating smoother trade between the two parties .

Impact on Imported Beef from South America:

The UK-EU agreement does not directly address imports of beef from South American countries. However, the UK’s alignment with certain EU food standards as part of this deal could indirectly influence its trade policies with third countries, including those in South America. Less buroucracy, less hassle through the border means truck could travel more freely without delay which mean more EU producers will be interested to offer and sell their products in the UK. This move could help increase the supply and maintain prices competitive contributing to a low inflation in the UK

Additionally, as covered on previous posts, it the EU has finalized a trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc (comprising Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay), which includes provisions for limited additional access for Mercosur beef into the EU market under specific quotas and tariffs . While the UK is no longer part of the EU, its trade policies could be influenced by such agreements, especially if it seeks to maintain regulatory alignment with the EU.
